Felt Work

Felt and Felt Making Tradition

Felt is the oldest known man made fabric and has a sustained heritage.

Felt making has been practiced by nomadic people in central Asia to construct yurts or felted wool tents, which were strong and weatherproof.

Scandinavians and Russians made felt boots and felt rugs, which continues to this day, and many eastern European Countries have a strong felt making culture.

Felt is still used for clothing, rugs and even housing in many countries all over the world.
In Britain felt is used in a variety of ways, both commercially and industrially.

Felt is becoming increasingly popular as an artistic or craft medium as it so versatile!

Creative Felt Making

There are many ways of creatively using felt, either artistically or practically. Felt can be used to create the finest gauze-like material or be made so strong that it can be made into three-dimensional objects, either solid or hollow.

On an artistic level felt can be used for wall-hangings, as a back-drop for hand or machine embroidery and three dimensional sculpture.

Felt can also be used on a practical level for clothing, handbags and footwear.
